The incident that occurred in the dormitory room on Thursday triggered a spontaneous protest overnight by NIT students and had to be suppressed by the administration and police.

Students had demanded the arrest of the culprit and condemned the alleged “humiliation of the victim,” but police called off the protest on Monday after announcing the man’s arrest and an official apologizing for the incident, police said.

“It is necessary to ascertain how a worker was allowed to enter the women’s hostel where one of the cameras was not working,” Tiruchirappalli Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar told reporters.

The culprit was arrested immediately after the affected student lodged a complaint with the police, he said, adding that the safety of women should be given priority.

Women police officers have been asked to interact with the students to ascertain whether there were similar cases in the past, the SP said.

The complainant claimed that the technician entered her room on the pretext of fixing the Wi-Fi on Thursday night and allegedly misbehaved with her, police said.
