Man ends ‘perfect vacation’ and abandons family because mother-in-law used his toothpaste

Family holidays are a much-loved way to spend time together, and an international trip is the dream of many families. However, one man’s dream holiday turned into a nightmare when he left the trip early after his mother-in-law used his toothpaste.

In a recent post on Reddit, a man shared that he and his wife had been planning a family trip to Venice for months and intended to leave their 5-year-old daughter with his mother-in-law. However, his mother-in-law wanted to join the trip.

“My wife was very supportive of this idea, but I was more hesitant. My wife planned everything, booked the hotels and restaurants,” he wrote in the post.

“My daughter likes to sit on our bed when my wife and I go out to town, and when I come back I see that my mother-in-law was also sitting on our bed. To me it is very unhygienic and I don’t like that she was sitting on the bed that my wife and I share, as I am a very private person,” he continued in the Reddit post.

“He also searched through our suitcase for a hair tie, and I was really annoyed that he did that without asking me. I don’t like the idea of him going through our stuff when we’re not there, so I locked it.”

The man said the final moment was when he realized his mother-in-law had been using his and his wife’s toothpaste, which he said made him feel “sick.” “I don’t like the idea of her putting her toothbrush near (or even on) the toothpaste nozzle, and I felt sick the more I thought about it,” he wrote.

“I asked MIL if the only reason she had come was to free me and my wife, as she had not paid for any of the expenses (hotel, amenities, food), only her own plane tickets. I told her that I had politely asked her several times to stop using my wife’s things, especially since I share them with her and it is very inappropriate.”

His mother-in-law told his wife, which led to an argument. The man became so angry about what had happened that he changed his plane ticket to leave early and started ignoring his wife’s phone calls.

“My wife called me several times afterward, yelling at me and telling me that our daughter was upset. I feel bad that our daughter was caught in that situation, but it really wasn’t acceptable what my mother-in-law did and I had to set some boundaries before it got worse,” the post reads.

“My wife has her own card and enough money to stay there. I’m not sure if she has plans to stay or not. I’ve been ignoring her calls for me to take some time for my own mental health.”

The post received over 1,000 upvotes. In the comments, many people shared their opinions on the situation.

“Your wife books the wrong hotel room, so your solution is to abandon her on her dream vacation, forcing her to care for your demanding kindergartener alone. Couldn’t you have booked a separate room for your mother-in-law instead of abandoning your wife and child?” one comment read.

Another commenter agreed, writing, “Your complaints are that MIL was using your WIFE’s products *not your products*, sharing toothpaste, and sitting on a hotel bed (which is more than you and your wife have ever used), all while babysitting your kids so you could have a romantic trip. Oh, and MIL had to pay for her own plane tickets to get that privilege. So in the end, you’re talking about a few dollars worth of products, a few cents worth of toothpaste, a few meals, and 1/5 of a hotel room, but she was ‘using’ them.”

“And now you’re ignoring your family after skipping the rest of the trip. I didn’t expect to be married much longer,” Third wrote.
