Man saved Rs 44,000 from ‘credit card’ scam with help from PhonePe: Here’s how he did it

Credit card scams happen frequently and only a few people manage to get their money back. Recently, a man took to Reddit to share his experience on how PhonePe helped him recover his funds from a credit card scam.

The redditor, who goes by the name “Sound_Less,” shared that he received a scam call from someone claiming to be from the HDFC Credit Card Department, offering you a free credit card for life.

Believing the call to be real, he went ahead with the process, including sharing an OTP to log in to the platform.

In her post, she wrote: “He then told me my address and the last 4 digits of my card to convince me that the call was legitimate. He asked me to confirm all the details of my card including its validity, CVV number and card number, which I provided him. Afterwards, he said that he would forward my information to a senior person, who would call me for further verification, and then ended the call.”

Two hours later, “Sound_Less” received another call. “This time too, he asked me for a one-time password. The moment I saw the one-time password, PhonePe was mentioned… In fact, this time I read the message and it was a transaction message of Rs 44 lakhs.”

He also shared the text message he received on his phone. It says, “OTP is 682241 for transaction of INR 44020.00 on PHONEPE PRI on HDFC Bank card ending in 5401. Valid until 01:29. Please do not share the OTP for security reasons.

“The first time they asked me for an OTP was to log in to my HDFC dotcom card and convince me that they knew all my details. And the second time it was a transaction message,” he wrote, detailing how he narrowly avoided the Rs 44,000 scam.
