Manipur schools and colleges to reopen from Tuesday

The Manipur government has said that schools and colleges, which have remained closed due to the prevailing law and order situation, will reopen on Tuesday and normal classes will resume.

On September 7, schools and universities closed following rocket attacks that killed one person and injured several others. Institutions remained closed as students took to the streets to demand a return to peace in the ethnically strife-torn state. They clashed with security forces, prompting curfews to be imposed in several districts.

The Directorate of Education (Schools) and the Department of Higher and Technical Education issued orders for the reopening of schools and universities on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, the Manipur government has relaxed curfew restrictions in Imphal East and West and Thoubal districts from 5 am to 6 pm on Tuesday to facilitate people in purchasing essential items, including food and medicines.

The relaxation, however, does not allow meetings, sit-ins or demonstrations.

More than 200 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in ethnic clashes between the Meiteis of the Imphal valley and the Kukis of the adjacent hills in Manipur since May last year.
