Manipur schools to remain closed on September 9 and 10 as violence escalates in state

Imphal: Schools in Manipur will remain closed on September 9 and 10 amid rising violence and unrest in the state. Unrest intensified in the state after a missile attack killed one person on Friday. The Directorate of Education has issued an order stating that all public, private and central schools will remain closed.

The order issued by the Directorate of Education read: “In continuation of this office order of even number dated 6th September, 2024, all state, government, government aided, private and central schools shall remain closed from 9th and 10th September, 2024.”

“All zonal education officers of the Education Department-Schools of Manipur are directed to inform all concerned under their jurisdiction and take necessary action accordingly. This order is issued with the approval of the Government,” the order added.

Earlier, schools were closed in the state on September 7 to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

Missile attack kills 1 person

The decision comes at a time when the state is facing heightened tension following recent drone and gun attacks that claimed civilian lives and left several others injured. Unknown armed groups on Friday fired a missile at the residence of late former Chief Minister M. Koireng on Sendra Road in Moirang, Manipur, resulting in one death and three injuries.

The deceased was identified as Rk. Rabei, 70, of Moirang Pheewangbam Leikai. Rabei was reportedly preparing for the Asti ceremony at the former Chief Minister’s residence when the missile attack took place.

Three other people were injured during the attack, although their identity and health status have not yet been revealed. The armed group responsible for the missile attack is unknown and local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Drone attacks continue

On Thursday, PTI reported that a section of residents of Senjam Chirang in Manipur were forced to flee their homes and seek shelter in a nearby community hall after bombs dropped from a drone injured three members of the family of a local resident two days ago.

The first bomb pierced the roof of the 65-year-old farmer’s house, injuring his daughter. Minutes later, another bomb fell from the sky, injuring him and his son, PTI reported.
