Nabanna Abhiyan: Clashes broke out again between police and protesters on GT Road in Howrah Maidan area of West Bengal when protesters tried to march towards the state secretariat as part of their “Nabanna campaign”. Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters. Protesters pelted security forces with stones and bricks and tried to break down barricades put up to block the road leading to the state secretariat.
Many police officers and students, including IC, were injured.
A policeman who identified himself as the in-charge of Chanditala police station of the Howrah Police Commissionerate was injured in the clash. A similar situation was seen in the Hastings and MG Road areas where protesters pelted stones at the police and the police were seen chasing people away. A woman protester said, “Why did the police beat us? We did not violate any law, we are holding a peaceful demonstration to demand justice for the deceased doctor. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should take responsibility and resign.”

This ‘Nabanna Abhiyaan’ is mainly attended by youths who are demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor at the Medical College Hospital and the arrest of those responsible for the incident. They were trying to reach ‘Nabanna’, the secretariat of the West Bengal government, with this demand.
