Closing bell: Domestic stock markets moved sideways in the last trading session of the week, with key indices closing slightly higher. Despite selling across all sectors, the market ended on a positive note.
The Bombay Stock Exchange’s 30-share sensitive index gained 33.02 points or 0.04 per cent to close at 81,086.21, while the broader Nifty 50 index of the National Stock Exchange closed at 24,823.15 with minor gains of 11.65 points or 0.05 per cent.
Bajaj Auto rose 4.74 per cent on Friday to become the top gainer. NSE It was followed by Coal India, which gained 1.7 percent, and Bharti Airtel, which rose nearly 1.6 percent. Tata Motors, Sun Pharma, ICICI BankBajaj Finserv and Mahindra & Mahindra were other top performers in today’s trading session.
However, Information Technology (IT) stocks dragged the market lower, with LTI Mindtree registering a 1.27 per cent drop to top the losers’ chart. LTI Mindtree was followed by Wipro which lost 1.16 per cent and ONGC which closed down 1.01 per cent. Other laggards of the day were Asian Paints, Titan, Divi’s Lab and Britannia.
In terms of sectoral performance on Friday, all sectors except Nifty Auto ended in the red. Sharp sell-off was seen in real estate stocks, with Nifty Realty falling 2.43 per cent. IT, media, banks, healthcare and oil & gas were other key sectors that registered a decline on August 23.
All market indices except the Nifty 50 also closed lower, with midcap stocks bearing the brunt. Volatility in the market also increased, with the India Vix index up 4.25 per cent.
