BSP supremacist Mayawati on Sunday (August 18) slammed the BJP government in Rajasthan, saying its decision to demolish the house of a boy who allegedly stabbed his classmate in Udaipur was against the rule of law.

In an interview on X (formerly Twitter), the BSP supremo said the state government failed to control the communal violence that broke out after the stabbing incident between two schoolchildren and in response, they demolished the house of the accused using a bulldozer.

“But this does not seem to be in line with the rule of law, and the honourable court should take cognizance of the incident,” he said.

“Politically motivated actions being taken in BJP-ruled states to cover up lawlessness and divert people’s attention are unjust. It would be better if the government enforced the law impartially and acted as its guardian,” he added.

It is pertinent to note that the city council demolished the house that the 15-year-old accused and his family were renting early on Saturday on the grounds that it was “encroaching” on forest land.

According to police, the forest department had sent a notice to the family on Saturday morning. Since the owner could not produce any ownership documents, the house was demolished.

Meanwhile, in a video circulated shortly after the demolition, a man who identified himself as the homeowner said there were four other families living in the house who had been asked to vacate.

“The family of the boy in question is now living in a relative’s house,” the man, Rashid Khan, is heard saying in the video. “Why is the administration demolishing my house? I went to the municipal corporation, but everyone was on leave. I went to the police station, but they refused to stop the demolition. This is an injustice to me – I have lost my house through no fault of my own.”

About the incident:

The incident occurred at a government school in Bhattiyani Chohatta, where a 10th grade student stabbed another boy. While the immediate cause of the altercation is still under investigation, police said the incident sparked violence across the city, with an angry mob pelting stones and setting three to four cars on fire.

“Following the unfortunate incident that took place during the day, there was public outrage on the streets, leading to some incidents of vandalism,” Udaipur CM Yogesh Goyal said.

“We have decided to immediately implement Section 144 in the city. The injured boy has received medical assistance and is now stable,” he added, noting that more police officers have been deployed to maintain law and order.
