MB Patil as Goyal says: “We need our own Silicon Valley”

Recently, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal proposed to create a new municipality dedicated to Startupsentrepreneurs and innovators to establish a new Silicon Valley in India.

“We should aim to go beyond that. We should aim to have our own Silicon Valley… I know Bengaluru is the Silicon Valley of India, but it is time we start thinking about partnering with NICDC and creating a completely new township dedicated to entrepreneurs, startups, innovators and disruptors,” Piyush Goyal said.

Responding, MB Patil, who is the Cabinet Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development in Karnataka, criticised Goyal’s comments and asserted that Bengaluru is already a crucial part of India’s innovation ecosystem.

“Our own country? Bengaluru is in India. India is our country,” Patil wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Patil further highlighted that it took decades to turn Bengaluru into the Silicon Valley of India.

“Structures, roads and infrastructure can be built. Building an ecosystem takes decades. Bengaluru is the hub of India’s knowledge ecosystem,” Patil wrote.

He also urged Chief Minister Piyush Goyal to help promote the development of ‘Namma Bengaluru’ as a global city and assist wherever possible in making the Knowledge, Healthcare, Innovation and Research (KHIR) City a major global destination.

“I urge @PiyushGoyalOffc Sh @PiyushGoyal to use his offices to help promote our very own “Namma Bengaluru” as a global city, and also help, wherever possible, make KHIR a massive global destination.”

It is worth noting that Karnataka aims to attract Rs 40,000 crore worth of investments in healthcare, innovation and knowledge sectors, creating 80,000 jobs in the proposed KHIR city.

The city would reportedly focus on key sectors such as mobility, semiconductors, advanced materials, aerospace, defense and space technology, life sciences and advanced manufacturing.
