The ward committee elections of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi began at the agency’s headquarters here on Wednesday amid heavy security deployment.

The long-pending elections are being held for the first time since the MCD’s unification in 2022. Due to the political deadlock between the ruling AAP and the opposition BJP, the elections could not be held and the matter was put on hold.

Anticipating a clash between the two sides, police have stepped up security in and around the Civic Centre in central Delhi.

A company of paramilitaries and local police have been deployed at the site.

In this poll, councillors will vote to elect a chairperson and a vice-chairperson for 10 of the 12 zonal-level ward committees, and one member for each of the standing committees, the highest decision-making body of the MCD.

Elections for the formation of ward committees in two zones (City SP and Keshav Puram) will not be held as the BJP and AAP did not make nominations.

Voting will be held in two groups across all MCD zones which will be held simultaneously and councillors from five zones will cast their votes together while the remaining zones will go to the polls separately.

The MCD zones, namely Rohini, Najafgarh, West, South and Central, will vote between 10 am and 4 pm on the first floor of the agency’s headquarters at Hansraj Gupta Auditorium.

The remaining five zones (Karol Bagh, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, Civil Lines and Narela) will vote simultaneously at the Satya Narayan Bansal Auditorium on the second floor.

The election will be held by secret ballot in accordance with the Delhi Municipal Corporation Rules, 1958.

Councillors from both parties had hoped the elections would go off without a hitch.

“We have full confidence that the elections will be held peacefully and the ward committee will be formed,” said BJP councillor Yogesh Verma.

Some also expressed apprehensions about the survey results.

“I don’t know what will happen. These BJP people can do anything. The Governor General is constantly harassing us; what can we do? We are helpless. They have jailed the chief minister…” said Amrit Jain, AAP councillor from Budh Vihar.
