Measures will be taken if potato prices are not reduced

Agriculture Marketing Minister Becharam Manna has warned potato traders in Kolkata that potato traders in the state have gone on strike demanding permission to export potatoes. Accepting their demand, the state government has given permission to export potatoes to other states. But a condition was put that potatoes should be sold in Bengal at the rate of Rs 30 per kg. But this is not happening. On Thursday, state Agriculture Marketing Minister Becharam Manna and members of the task force formed to control inflation visited various markets. During this time it was found that Jyoti potato is being sold at the rate of Rs 35 per kg, while in the wholesale market it is available at the rate of Rs 25 per kg. Following this, the Agriculture Marketing Minister warned potato traders that if the price of potatoes did not come down soon, action would be taken against traders selling potatoes at higher prices. The minister said that he will also visit various markets on Friday. Manna said that a review meeting on this issue will be held with potato traders next week. At the beginning of the meeting, the traders had promised to reduce the price of potatoes, but so far this has not happened. State Secretary of the Potato Traders Progressive Committee Lalu Mukhopadhyay said that there is a huge difference in the prices of potatoes in the wholesale and retail markets, which should not happen. Potatoes in cold storage are being sold at the rate of Rs 18 per kg, while in the wholesale market they are being sold at the rate of Rs 7 more per kg i.e. Rs 25 per kg, and in the retail market they are being sold at the rate of Rs 10 more i.e. Rs 35 per kg. The minister added that in the last few days not much potato has been taken out of the cold storage, due to which there is a shortage of potatoes in the market. But the situation will normalise in the next one or two days. In such a situation, the price of potatoes should fall, otherwise the federal government will take action.
