Meta food allowances are abused:Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has fired about two dozen employees from its Los Angeles office for misusing a $25 meal allowance, according to media reports.
Reports indicated that staff were fired after Meta discovered they were abusing the food credit system to purchase non-food items, including household items such as detergent, wine glasses and acne pads. The allowance, intended for daily meals, was also reportedly used to send food home instead of consuming it in the office.
Meta has not yet responded to queries from any of the publications at the time of writing. According to Fox Business, the company’s daily food allowance is set at $75, split into $20 for breakfast and $25 for lunch and dinner.
The report adds that habitual violators were fired, while employees who occasionally violated the policy received warnings. A former Meta employee, who earned $400,000 a year, posted on the anonymous networking platform Blind, admitting that he had used food credits to buy groceries. The former employee described the experience as “surreal” and claimed he confessed to the misuse during an internal investigation and was subsequently fired.
Separately, on October 17, The Verge reported that Meta began another round of layoffs, affecting staff across several divisions, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs. However, these cuts are part of a larger reorganization. broad and not a company-wide reduction in personnel.
Meta confirmed the layoffs in a statement and explained that the move aligns with its long-term strategies. The company added that it is relocating some teams and transitioning affected employees to new roles, while also working to help those whose positions have been eliminated.
