Meta’s big change: How Facebook and Instagram will now reveal AI-edited content

Meta is updating its AI labels on Facebook and Instagram, clarifying when content is AI-generated or edited using advanced tools.

Facebook and Instagram are making major changes to the way they label AI-generated content on their platforms. The social media giant, GoalMeta recently announced that it will be updating its “AI insights” labels on photos, videos, and audio to better reflect when and how AI is being used. These labels are part of a larger effort by Meta to make sure people know when they are interacting with content created or edited with artificial intelligence.

Meta first introduced AI labels in July, but the process drew some criticism, particularly from photographers and content creators. Many argued that the platform was incorrectly labelling photos and videos as “AI-generated” even if only basic editing tools were used, such as adjusting brightness or colour balance. This led to a backlash, as creators felt such simple edits did not warrant an AI label.

What is changing?

To address these concerns, Meta is now clarifying when AI tools are involved in content creation. Instead of labeling every edited photo or video with the “AI Insights” label, the company will reserve this label for content that was modified using advanced AI tools. Additionally, the label will be moved to a less prominent spot within the post menu (below the three-dot icon). This means users will still be able to access AI-related insights, but it won’t be as immediately visible.

Meta also clarified that content detected as being entirely AI-generated will continue to directly display the “AI Insights” label. Users can click on these labels to get more details about the type of AI used in the content, whether it was disclosed by the creator or detected by Meta’s AI detection tools.

Why it is important and when the update will be implemented

This change is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to comply with industry standards requiring AI-generated or edited content to be clearly labeled. By streamlining the labeling process, Meta hopes to reduce confusion while ensuring transparency about how AI is used on its platforms. The updated labeling system will begin rolling out next week.
