Michelle Obama He began his speech at the DNC convention with the lines: “America, Hope is returningMichelle Obama made a subtly critical comment about a country torn by uncertainty in her opening remarks, omitting Donald Trump’s name. However, she did affirm that better times are ahead: “America, hope is returning.”
As a result, the crowd rose to its feet.
1. Kamala’s abilities: Michelle Obama then went on to talk about Kamala Harris’ accomplishments. “Kamala Harris is well prepared for this particular occasion. She is one of the most qualified candidates to run for president in history. She is also one of the most honorable; she is a credit to her mother, mine, and yours, among others,” she said.
2. Attack on Donald Trump: Referring to the former president’s much-derided comment about undocumented immigrants taking “black jobs,” Obama referred to Trump by name and said, “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently looking for could be one of those black jobs? Kamala Harris was not a true citizen of the United States. She declared, “No one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American.”
3. Trump’s malice against the Obamas: The former first lady stressed that Donald Trump had spread the erroneous conspiracy theory that she was not an American citizen and therefore unfit to be president for much of Barack Obama’s term. “For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who just happen to be black,” Obama said.
4. Make the right decision: Obama urges people to “stand up for what we know is right” in America. Michelle Obama addressed her speech not only to the Democratic faithful gathered in Chicago, but to all Americans. “Look, I don’t care how you identify politically, whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, independent or none of the above, this is our moment to stand up for what we know in our hearts is right, to stand up, not just for our basic freedoms, but for decency and humanity, for basic respect, dignity and empathy for the values that are the very foundation of this democracy,” she said.
Michelle then introduced her husband Barack, who was scheduled to take the stage after her.
