Microsoft 365 outage affects thousands of users worldwide. Check out the latest updates here

Microsoft 365 down: More than 24,000 users reported issues with Microsoft 365.

Microsoft Microsoft 365, the popular productivity suite, suffered a widespread outage on Thursday, September 12, leaving thousands of users unable to access essential services. According to Downdetector, an outage tracking platform, over 24,000 incidents were reported by users facing difficulties with Microsoft 365. Many of the affected users also had issues with Microsoft Teams, with over 4,700 reports logged. This outage comes just two months after a massive outage caused by a faulty software update from Microsoft. Cybersecurity CrowdStrike affected nearly 8.5 million Windows devices across industries and paralyzed operations at companies ranging from airlines and banks to healthcare services.

Social media users have also expressed their frustration with Microsoft. One user took to X (formerly Twitter) to humorously express the problem: “Microsoft 365 and Teams are down so it’s a quiet morning for me.” Another user tweeted: “Microsoft is down, wouldn’t know I’m on Linux.”

Microsoft acknowledged the problem, stating on social media platform X: “We are investigating an issue where users may be unable to access several Microsoft 365 services.” However, the company has not yet clarified the cause of the outage or provided a timeline for recovery.

The Azure cloud platform, which is part of Microsoft’s infrastructure, also commented on the situation, suggesting that the outage could be related to problems with AT&T network connections. Microsoft is currently investigating these reports.

As of 9:12 am ET (6:42 pm IST), more than 16,500 users reported difficulties accessing Microsoft 365 products, while around 4,000 users experienced issues with AT&T services, according to Downdetector.

According to the latest update in the Microsoft 365 admin center, the outage was due to a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP), which had made changes to its managed environment that caused the outage. The ISP has since reverted the changes and Microsoft reports that it is seeing signs of recovery. However, the company continues to monitor network telemetry data to ensure full restoration of services. A further update is expected at 3:00 pm UTC (8:30 pm IST) as Microsoft works to resolve the remaining issues.

While Microsoft is working to resolve the current issue, the downtime has affected businesses and home users who rely on tools like Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams for their daily operations. While Microsoft investigates the root cause, users are awaiting a full recovery of services.

For now, the company is advising users to stay tuned for updates as they work to restore access and resolve connectivity issues on their platforms.
