Microsoft backed G42 to build India’s largest supercomputer with 8 exaflops of power

Microsoft and Mubadala-backed G42 will build India’s largest supercomputer with eight exaflops, which can perform trillions of floating-point operations per second, a senior company official said Tuesday.

G42 India CEO Manu Jain told PTI that the company also introduced a beta version of the Big Hindi Language Model – an AI engine with which users can converse in Hindi, English and Hinglish (a mix of Hindi and English).

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Abu Dhabi earlier this year and an MoU on digital infrastructure was signed between India and the UAE.

“We are the chosen implementation partner to execute this MoU. The MoU talks about three things: setting up a large 2-gigawatt data center in India, which can double the existing data center capacity in that country; second is to build one of the largest supercomputers in India, up to 8 exaflops, which we are building (G42) with Cerebras; and third is to jointly develop AI models in India,” Jain said.

However, he did not mention the timeline for installing the data center and supercomputer.

“We are very excited to have launched Nanda, the Hindi language broadsheet model today. The name of the LLM is derived from the highest mountain peak in India,” Jain said.

He said NANDA has been trained on a 13 billion parameter model trained on about 2.13 trillion tokens from language datasets including Hindi.

“With NANDA, we are ushering in a new era of AI inclusion, ensuring that the rich heritage and depth of the Hindi language is represented in the digital and AI landscape. NANDA exemplifies G42’s unwavering commitment to excellence and fostering equitable AI,” said Ince, a G242 group company.
