He has been sidelined with an ankle injury as the star player had to undergo even surgery. He missed all action since then, including the 2024 T20 World Cup and IPL 2024. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation and has started bowling in the nets, and it seems that his return will come sooner rather than later. Ranji Trophy 2024/25.

According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, Mohammed Shami has been included in the list of 31 probables for the Bengal Bengal’s squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. A report by news agency PTI earlier this month claimed that Shami could play for Bengal in one or both of their first two matches of the season against Uttar Pradesh (beginning October 11) and Bihar (beginning October 18).

According to multiple reports, the BCCI is eyeing Mohammed Shami to be fully fit ahead of the all-important tour to Australia for the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy that begins on November 22. The plan for Shami, as per a report by Cricbuzz, is to play the first match of the 2024 Ranji Trophy, before making his return to India for the home Test series against New Zealand in October.

Alternatively, Mohammed Shami could be part of the India A squad that would travel to Australia to play a couple of four-day matches before being included in India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

As for Bengal’s likely candidates for the Ranji Trophy, Mohammed Shami’s brother Mohammed Kaif also finds a place. On the other hand, Wriddhiman Saha has also been included. Saha had left Bengal to play for Tripura in domestic cricket last season. However, ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has rejoined Bengal.
