Days after resigning as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), actor Mohanlal She finally broke her silence on the recently released Hema Committee report and said that she was not part of any power group in the Malayalam film industry and was not aware of the existence of any such group in the sector. She said that Malayalam cinema is a huge industry in which thousands of people work and the actors’ association AMMA could not address the issues that arose there.

He said the executive committee of the Association which he headed had recently resigned in the wake of allegations that surfaced against them following the release of the Justice Hema Committee report. It was the first time that Mohanlal, former AMMA president, had addressed the media following the release of the expert panel report which shed light on alleged harassment and exploitation of women professionals in the Malayalam film industry.

“Wrongdoers must be punished if there is evidence against them,” the actor said, referring to allegations of misconduct and sexual assault that have emerged against some of the Association’s members.

“I am not part of any power group in Malaysian cinema and I am not aware of the existence of any such group,” he added, saying the release of the Hema Committee report was a good decision by the government.

At an event, Mohanlal also mentioned that he was recently busy with his family as his wife was undergoing a surgery, which is why he could not respond to the issue earlier.

Earlier this week, Mohanlal resigned along with other senior officials amid a backlash over sexual abuse allegations against some of its members. Many actresses, including a Bengali actress, have gone public with allegations of sexual harassment against some of the most well-known faces of Malay cinema, including eminent director Ranjith and actors Siddique and Mukesh, in the wake of the Justice K Hema Committee report.
