New Delhi: A man and a boy were attacked by an “animal” in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district and residents suspect a wolf was responsible, officials said Sunday. For the past two months, residents of the district have been living in fear due to a pack of stray wolves.

A team from the forest department has captured four wolves so far. Officials said on Sunday that drones have detected two more wolves, which are expected to be captured today or tomorrow. Abhishek Singh, CO Forest, Bahraich Division, told ANI, “Our entire team will be here under the guidance of the DFO. We detected the presence of wolves through drones. Both the wolves have been tracked in this area. We will capture them today or tomorrow.”

In the past month and a half, wolves have been responsible for eight deaths in Bahraich. The most recent confirmed wolf attack took place in a village on the night of Monday to Tuesday.

The man who claimed to have been attacked by an animal on Sunday said: “At 4am an animal attacked me… It attacked my neck with its jaws. It was bigger than a jackal. I couldn’t identify the animal. I got nervous at that time. So I’m not sure what animal it was. If I hadn’t caught its mouth, it would have killed me.”

Meanwhile, a relative of the injured boy said: “He was attacked by the wolf at around 1:30 am. When we shouted, the wolf left him and went away. We chased him, but he went into the sugarcane fields. It was a wolf. There is a footprint in the house.”

Ashish Verma, in-charge of the Community Health Centre (CHC), told ANI, “Both the persons have minor injuries. One came at 2 am and the other at 5 am… They are not in any critical condition. The patient claimed that it was a wolf attack. However, it is a matter for the Forest Department to investigate.”

On Saturday morning, the forest department team set up traps at Sisayya Chudaamani village, where the fourth wolf was captured on Thursday. In response to the recent wolf attacks, the department has been setting off firecrackers at night to protect the villagers.

Commenting on the recent attacks, Mahasi police officer Rupendra Gaur said, “Drones, nets and cages are being used to catch the wolves. We are continuously trying to catch them… We are ensuring that no untoward incident takes place anywhere. Eight people have lost their lives and 15 others are injured.”

Also, on Wednesday, the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department It deployed an infrared (IR) drone, which detected the presence of two wolves in Bahraich.
