Morne Morkel has been appointed as India’s new bowling coach, according to a report

Former South African speedster Morne Morkel has been appointed as the new bowling coach for the senior men’s team, Cricbuzz reports. It mentions that Morkel’s contract with the Men in Blue starts on September 1.

Morkel and head coach Gautam Gambhir had already had a successful partnership when they were together at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Gambhir also took Morkel with him to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) when the former was the mentor of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team.

Morkel had a historic career with the South African national team, playing a key role for them in three international formats.

He played 86 Test matches for the Proteas, in addition to 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is. Morkel formed a fast-bowling duo with paceman Dale Steyn.

In the longest format, he took 309 wickets at an economy rate of 3.10 and a delivery average of 27.66. Morkel took 18 four-wicket hauls and there were eight instances where he took five wickets or more in an innings in red-ball cricket.

Morkel was a key part of the KKR teams that won the Indian Premier League (IPL) titles in 2012 and 2014 under Gambhir’s watch. He played 70 matches in the competition, capturing 77 wickets at an economy rate of 7.69 and a bowling strike rate of 21.16. He also played for Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.

Morkel also coached the Pakistan national team earlier. His appointment helps Gambhir reunite with his trusted lieutenants as Abhishek Nayar also moved from KKR training to become the national team’s assistant coach.
