Mpox virus outbreak: Thailand is the latest country to report a fatal case of the Mpox virus in a European man who arrived from Africa last week. Health Ministry officials are awaiting test results to determine the strain.
Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the viral infection a global public health emergency. Since then, cases of Mpox have been reported in several countries. More than 500 people have so far lost their lives due to the infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the disease was first reported.
Mpox has two major strains: clade 1B and clade 2 variants. The clade 1B variant is more deadly and responsible for more deaths, with a mortality rate of 3.5 percent, according to data from Congo. Its spread is also a cause for great concern because so far little is known about it.
Clade 2 variant case in the Philippines
According to Philippine authorities, a mild case of the Clade 2 variant has been reported in a 33-year-old local man with no recent travel history, indicating possible local transmission.
Mpox signs and symptoms
According to experts, some people who contract Mpox have less severe symptoms, while others may develop a more severe illness and require hospital care. Most infections last between two and four weeks and resolve on their own, but some cases can become severe, especially if you have the clade 1B strain.
Doctors recommend going to a hospital immediately if you have a blistering rash, anal pain, or bleeding from your anus and any of the following symptoms:
- You have been in close contact, including sexual contact, with someone who has or may have Mpox in the past 3 weeks.
- Had one or more new sexual partners in the last 3 weeks
- Have you been in West or Central Africa in the past three weeks?
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, can cause a variety of signs and symptoms, including:
Rash
A rash that looks like pimples, lesions, or blisters may appear on the face, inside the mouth, and other parts of the body, such as the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or anus. According to doctors, the itchy rash may last 2 to 4 weeks and go through different stages before it heals completely.
Flu-like symptoms
Doctors say Mpox also has flu-like symptoms such as high fever, muscle aches, sore throat, fever, chills and body aches.
Other symptoms
Some other signs like constant and severe headache, swollen lymph nodes, exhaustion, back pain, difficulty in swallowing, swollen eyelids, low energy, joint pain, and swollen glands can also be attributed to Mpox.
