You’ve probably been getting feedback about your role in Gyaarah Gyaarah. What is that feedback like?

One beautiful thing is that Umesh (director Umesh Bist), the director of the series, told me that he had never celebrated a life and said goodbye to a character in this way. I think that’s what Palak Rana’s character brought to the series. I had no idea about the other cases, just my own. I loved that there was a personal angle to the investigator solving the serial murder case and her fiancé being caught up in it. The characters were so beautifully drawn, and I was worried about what would happen if she could be saved. But people received the character so warmly, and the other day, someone even recognised me on the street and said, “You played that character so well.” It felt good that people noticed.

Gyaarah Gyaarah is a collaboration between Dharma and Sikhiya. How did you feel when you first heard that?

Sikhiya had done the pre-production and we were already on location when we heard that Dharma was going to be involved. We were excited that more people would come to see us and more people would know about the series. Dharma advertises projects very well and with Oscar winner Guneet Monga and Karan Johar, it seemed like the project was in good hands. I was very happy that these amazing production houses were telling such a gripping suspense drama.

Tell us a little about the filming experience.

Most of my scenes were shot at night because of the nature of the serial murder case and the specific girls being sought. Shooting in January in Dehradun and Mussoorie, especially at Kempty Falls, was memorable. It was freezing cold (about 2 degrees) and the sound of the waterfall was so loud that we couldn’t hear each other. Shooting a murder scene in such conditions was quite a challenge, but my childhood memories of Kempty Falls, where it used to be so much fun, have changed now. Shooting there made me feel grateful to be alive.

What was it like preparing for the crime scene? Was it challenging or mentally exhausting?

You can’t prepare for certain scenes, like when they put a plastic bag with no holes in it on your face and after you inhale it, it sticks to your mouth and nose. You end up inhaling carbon dioxide and you have to do several takes of that. In the wide shots, you can cheat a bit, but in the close-ups, you have to live it honestly. It makes you empathize with anyone who has been through that, and I felt grateful to be alive. The production team was very supportive, always covering me with a shawl between takes. It’s a difficult scene, but I like to challenge myself.

How was it reuniting with Raghav on the same project?

We couldn’t meet because our scenes were separate. But I told him that I was going to play this character and he didn’t even know who was going to play it because they were already shooting when I joined. I am very happy for him. He has been bagging back-to-back Sikhiya projects like Kill and Gyaarah GyaarahWe’ve both gone from dancing to acting together and I feel so proud when I see him do it well.
