Mumbai: Two arrested after assaulting a female doctor at Sion Hospital

Bombay: Police have arrested three people, including two women, after a female doctor was allegedly assaulted at the Sion Municipal Hospital here in the early hours of Sunday, an official said.

The accused allegedly attacked the doctor when she was wiping blood from a man’s ear at the emergency ward of the facility, officially known as Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital and Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College.

The man shouted at the female doctor, triggering an argument, the Sion police station official said. Of those who had come with the patient, two women and a man assaulted the female doctor, prompting the hospital staff to request police intervention, the official said.

Police registered a case against the three alleged attackers under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Maharashtra Medicare Violence and Property Damage or Loss Prevention Act for Individuals and Institutions.

Two of the three accused have been arrested, the official said.

In a statement on the incident, Sion Hospital said: “There has been an incident of violence at Sion Hospital which occurred early this morning involving one of the residents on duty on the ward. A group of five or six intoxicated patient attendants threatened her and attempted to physically assault her. She also sustained injuries whilst defending herself.” The statement called the assault “alarming” and said the safety of its doctors was “non-negotiable”.

“This situation requires immediate attention and the implementation of strict security measures in all hospitals,” he added.

The assault comes amid a nationwide uproar over the safety of doctors following the rape-murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
