Murder case filed against Sheikh Hasina and six others in Bangladesh

A murder case has been registered against the former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others have been accused of allegedly shooting dead a grocery shop owner by police on July 19, local media reported. The shop owner, named Abu Sayeed, was found dead in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on July 19, The Daily Star reported.

This is the first case filed against Hasina after she resigned as the country’s prime minister on August 5 and fled to India.

Besides Hasina, The other accused named in the case are Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Bangladesh Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DB chief Harun Or Rashid, former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman and former DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker.

Lawyer Md Mamun Miah told the media outlet that apart from them, several other unnamed senior police and government officials have been charged in the matter.

The case against the former prime minister and others was filed by Amir Hamza Shatil, a resident of Mohammadpur and “sympathiser of the victim”, the report said.

The case has been filed before the Dhaka Metropolitan Court, Judge Rajesh Chowdhury, and will be heard soon.

Abu Sayeed was allegedly killed around 4 p.m. (local time) on July 19 as “police fired indiscriminately at students and ordinary people” amid anti-quota protests in the country, Shatil said in his complaint.

However, the complainant said that the victim was not among his close relatives and filed the complaint voluntarily.

The complaint further states that Abu Sayeed’s relatives live in Boda Upazila in BangladeshPanchagarh district. He further claims that the victim’s family cannot afford to file a complaint.

Hasina resigned and fled the country amid protests against her government over the controversial job quota system. The 76-year-old flew to Hindon air base near Delhi in a military aircraft on August 5.

Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus was sworn in as senior adviser to the interim government on Thursday.
