Astronauts from NASA’s Artemis III lunar mission will adorn spacesuits designed by a luxury fashion house Prada in collaboration with the commercial space company Axiom Space.
These new designer spacesuits were presented on Wednesday at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan.
The predominantly white suits feature a cut-out torso design with stone gray patches adorning the elbows and knees. Despite being noticeably devoid of branding or logos, the designs feature decorative red lines on the forearms, waist and “portable living system backpacks,” which are a subtle homage to Prada’s Linea Rossa sub-brand.
At the press conference, Russel Ralston, executive vice president of Axiom Space, called the partnership “groundbreaking” and said, “We are combining engineering, science and art.”
Characteristics of the new ‘elegant’ suits
Prada-designed spacesuits include a variety of innovative features, such as specially designed boots, heat-reflective material, and more.
Prada, as stated on its website, thanks to the brand’s expertise in raw materials, manufacturing techniques and innovative design, its engineers worked closely with the Axiom Space team to create a suit “capable of protecting astronauts.” from the harsh environment of space and allow, for the first time, human exploration of the lunar south pole.”
According to Lorenzo Bertelli, marketing director of the Prada Group, the fashion house has been discussing the collaboration since before the COVID-19 The pandemic hit in 2020.
Approximately ten Prada employees participated in the spacesuit project, traveling between Milan and Axiom Space’s headquarters in Houston.
The Artemis III mission, scheduled for the second half of 2026, aims to mark from NASA first moon landing by an astronaut since Apollo 17 in 1972. In addition, this mission could witness the historic moment of the first woman to set foot on the moon.
