The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Bengal government and the state police chief in the rape and murder case of a woman doctor at the RG Kar Government Medical College and Hospital in the metropolis. The commission on Tuesday said it had sought a report from the officials within two weeks. In a statement issued here, the NHRC said it had taken suo motu cognisance of the media report that a young woman doctor was found dead in the auditorium of the RG Kar Government Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The Commission said: According to the report, there were scratches on the body of the deceased, which indicate that there was a struggle at the time of the incident. According to the report, the family has alleged that the victim was raped and murdered. The NHRC said that if the content of the media reports is true, then it is a serious issue of violation of the victim’s human rights. Accordingly, a notice is issued to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal and the Director General of Police and a detailed report is sought within two weeks.
According to the statement, the report is expected to include details on the current status of the investigation being conducted by the police, the measures taken against those responsible and the compensation (if any) paid to the family of the deceased. The Commission also wanted to know what measures the authorities have taken or are going to take to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
