As ‘Haddi’ completes its first anniversary, it’s a good time to revisit Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s transformative journey in one of the most complex and challenging roles of his career. Portraying a transgender character, Nawazuddin immersed himself completely in his craft to bring authenticity and depth to the screen.
Looking back, Nawazuddin shared her intense dedication to the role, saying, “I worked really hard on this character after a long time.” Her preparation was anything but ordinary as she spent time living among the transgender community to understand their lives and emotions. “Before filming ‘Haddi,’ I was with the community. They see themselves as women and aspire to feel complete. Keeping this in mind, I approached the role as if I was playing a female character,” she explained.
Reflecting on the physical and emotional transformation, he said, “The make-up alone took me three hours. As it progressed, I felt myself changing. I adopted a softness in my demeanor and even wore the same underwear as a woman. I no longer wanted to be Nawaz; I wanted to truly become the character.”
Nawazuddin also highlighted the challenges she faced during filming: “It was one of the most difficult characters I have ever played. The whole process, including the elaborate make-up, taught me a lot about what actresses go through.”
