NC govt to announce candidates after notification of first phase of JK polls | India News

New Delhi: The National Conference will announce its candidates for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir after the notification of the first phase of the three-phase polls, party vice president Omar Abdullah said here on Sunday.

The call for the first phase is scheduled for August 20 and voting is scheduled for September 18.

“It has not even been two days since the announcement (of the elections). Give us some time, we are making preparations. The call for the first phase will be issued on August 20. We will announce our candidates after that and we hope to be successful,” Abdullah told reporters.

He was asked when the party would announce its candidates for the elections.

Responding to a question on the BJP’s allegation that the NC was displaying overconfidence after Abdullah told a private television news channel that the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, in its first order of business after the elections, will pass a resolution against the Centre’s decision to strip the region of its statehood and special status, the NC leader said it is not for the BJP to talk of overconfidence.

“The BJP has set a new example of overconfidence. Who gave the slogan of 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections? Not me. It was the BJP’s slogan. Then they talked about 370 (seats), but where did they stop? At 240. The BJP had better not talk about overconfidence.

“I have only said that we are hopeful that if the people support us, we will have a chance to rule. We do not count the number of seats that the BJP always has. I remember that in the 2014 Assembly elections, they claimed 45 seats. It is not for the BJP to talk about this. Let them talk about themselves and let us talk about ourselves,” he added.

Meanwhile, a former PDP legislator from Karnah, Javid Mirchal, joined the NC and was welcomed into the party by Abdullah and other senior leaders.

“It is fortunate for the NC that a leader who is so connected to the people and has such a close relationship with them has joined the NC today. It is also a sign of which way the wind is blowing,” the NC vice president said.

He said Mirchal had not set any preconditions for his incorporation.

“There was no negotiation. When he met me, he only talked about the people of Karnah. He only said that the area should be developed and there should be real representation and the problems of the people should be resolved. We have assured him that if God willing and the NC is able to form the government, then we will surely address the problems of Karnah,” Abdullah said.
