Bombay: The recent case of child sexual abuse at a school in Badlapur has sparked outrage and highlighted the deeper problem of widespread violence against women in the state. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, when the country was under restrictions on movement, the rate of crimes against women in Maharashtra showed no signs of abating. Alarming statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau reveal that during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government headed by Uddhav Thackeray, an average of 109 women were victims of violence and other forms of atrocities every day in Maharashtra.
According to the data, in 2020, Maharashtra recorded 31,701 crimes against women, which translates to an average of 88 cases per day. However, in 2021, this figure rose to 39,266, with 109 women victimized daily. From January to June 2022, during the Maha Vikas Aghadi regime, the average daily number of crimes against women was 126. While there was a slight dip to 116 from July to December 2022 under the Mahayuti government, the figure has again risen to 126 in 2023, underlining the persistent threat to women’s safety in the state.
There has been a significant rise in crimes against minor girls under the POCSO Act (Section 12). The number of such cases increased from 249 in 2021 to 332 in 2022. While there has been a slight decline in POCSO-related rape cases in Mumbai in 2023, the numbers are still alarmingly high. In 2020, 445 rape cases were reported, which increased to 524 in 2021, with a slight decline to 590 in 2023.
NCRB data clearly shows that crimes against women are a cause for concern. Citizens stress that there is an urgent need to take effective and concrete measures to ensure the safety of women in Maharashtra.
