NEET– Dr Vaibhav Garg, a native of Chandigarh, is the only doctor from a family of engineers and the first to secure the top rank in the all-India ranking with 100 percentile. The result of NEET-PG 2024 was declared by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) on August 23.
Garg, a resident of Dhakoli, broke down NEET-PG on his first attempt. Talking about his ambition to become a doctor, he told an English daily that the inspiration to pursue medicine came after he lost his maternal uncle, who was very close to him, in the second wave of the COVID pandemic.
He passed his 10th grade from St John’s High School in Sector 26, Chandigarh and 12th grade from Sri Guru Gobind Singh Collegiate Public School in Sector 26. He said that curiosity to know more about the human body was also another main reason for him to choose medicine after 12th grade.
Vaibhav’s father, Sanjeev Garg, is an Assistant Executive Engineer at Haryana Power Generation Limited and his mother Manju Garg is a primary school teacher at DAV-Surajpur School. His sister Aditi works at Amazon As a software engineer.
Dr Vaibhav Garg, who comes from a family of engineers, was determined to study medicine, especially after his maternal uncle passed away during the pandemic. That steely determination has now paid off as he has secured the top rank across India in the National Graduate Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET PG) in his first attempt and made Chandigarh proud.
Mantra of success
“At first, I only had three or four hours to study. NEET– PG because I was also doing an internship. However, after that I started spending 12 hours on preparation. During this time, I stayed away from social media. I used WhatsApp and Telegram to access study material and clear my doubts,” he said.
“I want to specialise in medicine and repeated revisions helped me a lot. I kept revising the standard textbooks that are part of the syllabus,” he said. “I also did a lot of mock tests and solved questions and question banks from previous years,” he added.
‘NEET ‘The postponement of the PG caused anxiety’
Speaking about the postponement of NEET-PG from June to August, said it caused her anxiety.
“It was in the evening (before the scheduled exam) that it became known that the exam had been postponed, and by then I had already fallen asleep. In the morning, when I woke up to prepare for the exam, I saw that the exam had been postponed. It made me anxious, but such incidents teach you a lot – patience and perseverance,” she said. “Staying focused on your goal will help you achieve what you want,” she added.
