Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those from Jalgaon who lost their lives in a bus accident in Nepal, which claimed 27 lives in western Nepal on Friday.
Earlier in the day, expressing regret over the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Indian government immediately contacted the Nepalese authorities following the incident.
“I would like to express my grief over the bus accident that occurred in Nepal. Among those who lost their lives, several were from Jalgaon. I offer my condolences to all the families of the victims,” PM Modi said while addressing the Lakhpati Didi Sammelan in Jalgaon on Sunday.
PM Modi assured that the injured were receiving proper medical treatment. “As soon as the accident occurred, the government immediately got in touch with the Nepalese authorities. We have instructed our minister Raksha Khadse to go to Nepal without any delay. We have brought back the bodies of our deceased citizens in a special Air Force aircraft,” the Prime Minister said.
“The injured are being treated well. I wish them a speedy recovery,” he added. PM Modi has also announced a compensation of Rs 200,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of those killed in the accident. The injured in the accident will be given Rs 50,000, the PM said in a post.
The Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft carrying the remains of 25 Indian pilgrims who died in the road accident in Nepal landed at Jalgaon airport in Maharashtra on Saturday. The military aircraft had flown to Bharatpur town in Chitwan district, close to Tanahun district, where the Indian-registered bus crashed on Friday.
Twenty-seven people were killed in the bus accident, in which the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a river basin. Chitwan district chief Indradev Yadav said earlier that two of the bodies were sent by road to their hometown Gorakhpur.
Post-mortem examinations were conducted at Bharatpur Hospital and the bodies were handed over to Indian authorities for transfer. Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse and Maharashtra lawmaker Sanjay Shubhakar arrived in Nepal on Saturday morning to check on the health status of the injured Indian nationals.
Both officials returned on the same plane. Khadse met the 16 injured people who were receiving treatment at Tribhuvan Medical College Hospital in Kathmandu and received updates on their condition.
Raksha Nikhil Khadse thanked the Nepalese government for its prompt assistance in the search and rescue operations and for the treatment provided to the injured. She also expressed her gratitude to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu for its on-ground coordination efforts with the Nepalese authorities.
The bus was heading to Kathmandu from Pokhara when it veered off the road at Ainapahara in Ward 2 of the rural municipality and fell about 150 metres into the river on Friday.
