Months after his initial arrest for his alleged involvement in the 2023 attack on the Indian High Commission in London, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday (September 5) filed a chargesheet against Inderpal Singh Gaba as a key accused in the incident.

Gaba, a UK citizen residing in Hounslow and originally from New Delhi, has been charged by the NIA for his role as one of the agitators who actively participated in the anti-India protest on March 22, 2023, in line with the Khalistani secessionist agenda.

It may be noted that the Indian High Commission in London was targeted in a series of attacks in March 2023, the first of which occurred on March 19, when a smaller group tore down the Indian flag, leading to injuries to some embassy staff. While later, in the March 22 incident, over 2,000 Khalistani supporters vandalised the High Commission building, throwing items, including ink, to deface it. Since then, the NIA has been conducting an extensive investigation to uncover the entire conspiracy and identify those involved.

NIA arrests Inderpal Singh Gaba

While the investigation into the attack was underway, the NIA had first arrested Gaba in connection with his alleged role in the March 22 incident. Immigration authorities then detained Gaba at the Attari border in December 2023 upon his arrival from London via Pakistan, following a lookout circular issued against him. He was then barred from leaving the country while the investigation was on, according to an NIA statement.

What the investigation revealed

Following Gaba’s arrest, the NIA conducted a months-long investigation during which they seized his mobile phone and examined incriminating data, including videos and photographs of the incident. This evidence ultimately confirmed Gaba’s involvement in the attack.

Furthermore, the NIA findings also suggest two important points: that the London attack was planned and carried out in retaliation for the action taken by the Punjab police against Amritpal Singh, the chief of Waris Punjab De, with the aim of influencing the crackdown on the group and its leader; and secondly, the attack was aimed at furthering the cause of Khalistan by attempting the secession of the state of Punjab from India.
