The latest edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), which the Ministry of Education will release on Monday, August 12, can significantly help you choose the right institution that can offer the course of your choice, eventually contributing to your path to success.
Institutions are classified into up to 13 categories ranging from general, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and related sectors, and innovation.
These institutions are then ranked based on five crucial parameters consisting of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusion, and perception.
Based on these parameters, these rankings will help the aspirants to select the institution of their choice in relation to the course they wish to pursue.
1.Give a general idea of the academic resources of the institution.
One of the major benefits of NIRF rankings is that it allows applicants to gather in-depth insights into an institution’s resources – from the number of faculty members to the number of students, or the number of PhD students, etc. For this purpose, NIRF rankings give a weightage of 0.30 to the Teaching, Learning, and Resources parameter which deals with the institution’s number of students including PhD students (SS), faculty-to-student ratio with an emphasis on tenured faculty (FSR), the combined metric for PhD (or equivalent) and experienced faculty (FQE), and Financial Resources and their Utilization (FRU).
2. Institution qualified based on its research experience
Through the NIRF rankings, applicants can gain clear insights into the research experience of a particular institution. This is a crucial parameter for those who wish to pursue research. With a weightage of 0.30, the Professional Practices and Research parameter ranks institutions under four broad subheadings including a combined metric for publications (PU), a combined metric for quality of publications (QP), IPR and patents – published and granted (IPR), and a footprint of projects and professional practice (FPPP), which help candidates select institutions that provide significant research opportunities.

3. Clarity on an institution’s placement rate
Placement remains one of the most important criteria when it comes to admission into a university or college. Naturally, an applicant will seek admission to a place where the placement record is high.
Here, NIRF rankings can come in handy. Through the Graduation Results parameter, the applicant can get an idea of the number of students who have passed a particular course and obtained degrees, which contributes to their placement rate.
The GO ranks institutions in terms of the average number of students during the previous years who passed the respective university examinations within the time stipulated for the programme they enrolled in, and also the average number of PhD students who graduated during the previous years.
4. How inclusive is the institution?
Another benefit of the NIRF Ranking is the rating of an institution in terms of how inclusive it is when it comes to providing equal educational opportunities for all. This may include students who come from economically weaker sections, the number of students from other countries or states, the percentage of students with physical challenges, and more. Through the parameter of Outreach and Inclusion, institutions are ranked based on the Percentage of Students from Other States/Countries (RD Regional Diversity), Percentage of Females (WD Female Diversity), Students with Economic and Social Challenges (ESCS), Facilities for Students with Physical Challenges (PCS), and Perception Rating (PR).
5. The general perception of an institution
Lastly, the institution helps the aspirants to know the recognition that the institution has among its industry peers and the level of academic trust that it has achieved over the years. In other words, an institution with a good perception score will enable more placement opportunities for the applicants.
It is worth mentioning here that the NIRF ranking methodology is based on the general recommendations arrived at by a Central Committee set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to identify the general parameters for ranking of various universities and institutions.
