Noida International Airport: Noida International Airport will have a capacity of over 1 lakh tonnes when cargo facility opens, will grow with demand: CEO Christoph Schnellmann

The development works of the cargo terminal and the multimodal cargo center in Noida International Airport In Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, work is underway in full swing in collaboration with Air India Satellite Services, Christoph Schnellmann, Executive Director of the NIA he said on Thursday, noting that there will be carrying capacity for more than one lakh tonnes of cargo when the facility is opened.

Schnellmann said work on the passenger terminal is also in full swing.

“The development work on the cargo terminal and multi-modal cargo hub is also in full swing. We are working in partnership with Air India SATS, which has designed the facility, is constructing it and will operate it. When the facility is inaugurated, it will have a capacity of over 100,000 tonnes of cargo and is designed in a modular fashion to grow with demand. We plan to submit our application for an aerodrome licence this year,” he said.

Schnellmann said they plan to submit our application for the airfield license this year.

“Today we have an opportunity to showcase the progress we have made in developing Noida International Airport over the last 4.5 years… We expect to see a ramp-up in flight operations in the coming weeks and months. We expect calibration flights for the instrument landing system to be conducted in September,” he said.

“In October, we expect to see a series of validation flights for approach and departure procedures later this year,” he added. Responding to questions, he said the design they have selected for the passenger terminal will largely incorporate the rich architectural heritage of the region. “We will use design elements that are prevalent in northern India, in western Uttar Pradesh,” he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the first stone of Jewar Airport November 26, 2021.

The airport is expected to be operational by the end of this year, two years before IGI Airport reaches its maximum traffic handling capacity.

The airport will be strategically located about 72 kilometres from Indira Gandhi International Airport, about 52 kilometres from Noida, about 130 kilometres from Agra and about 90 kilometres from the Multimodal Logistics Hub at Dadri.
