Nokia to invest Rs 450 crore to set up largest R&D lab in Chennai for fixed wireless business

Finland Nokia is expanding its R&D presence in India by setting up its largest global R&D facility for its fixed networks business in Chennai.

“The new R&D lab will be one of the largest globally for Nokia and the largest for its fixed networks business, and this expansion reinforces Nokia’s commitment to developing cutting-edge technologies that help connect the unconnected and bridge the digital divide,” the Finnish telecom equipment maker said in an official statement on Friday.

Nokia is likely to invest around Rs 450 crore on this global R&D facility in Chennai for its fixed network business, a person familiar with the matter said.

As a key hub for fixed networks, this investment will strengthen Nokia’s technological innovations in 10G, 25G, 50G and 100 GPON, fixed wireless access, Wi-Fi and MDU solutions, as well as access networks and home controllers, Nokia added.

Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, in turn, noted that Nokia’s, and possibly the world’s, largest fixed networks lab would be in Chennai. “We aim to sustain this momentum and generate high-value employment opportunities for our youth.” To facilitate this R&D expansion, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was recently signed between the Tamil Nadu government and Nokia in the presence of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
