One of the few people who can be clinical about Indian cricket and not overly emotional,” Manjrekar told ESPN Cricinfo.
Gambhir was instrumental in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) securing their third IPL championship earlier this year. His success proved decisive and led to the BCCI selecting him as Rahul Dravid’s successor after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The two-time World Cup winner has been in the spotlight frequently. Sanjay Manjrekar believes Gambhir could alter his public image to benefit his role as coach of the national team. He is also keen to watch how the dynamic between Gambhir and Rohit Sharma develops.
“What we see from Gambhir is his public image, as a player and as a TV pundit. Now, when he joins the team as a coach, I am sure that at some point he will change his ways a little and think differently, and the relationship between captain and coach is a very private thing. You have no idea how they will both evolve with this relationship,” he added.
The inaugural Test match between India and Bangladesh is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
