Odisha govt to amend cow slaughter prevention act: CM

Odisha News: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday announced that his government is planning to amend the Odisha Cow Slaughter Prevention Act, 1960 to reduce cruelty to animals. He made this remark during the ‘Monsoon Meet’ organised by the Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. Majhi underlined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of improving the living standards of small and marginal farmers by increasing the scope of animal husbandry in villages, improving animal health, fisheries and beekeeping. He said, “The new government is yet to complete its first 100 days, but Odisha has prepared a plan for transformative changes across sectors, aimed at immediate and long-term development.” Majhi said that to promote milk production, his government has come up with ‘Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana’ under which Rs 1,423.47 crore will be spent in the next five years. He said this initiative will help small dairy units, provide fodder for calves at subsidized rates, increase livestock insurance coverage and strengthen dairy cooperative societies. The Chief Minister said the state has also launched Gomata (Gomata for Cattle Management and Treatment) scheme to improve health care of cattle through mobile veterinary clinics. He said another new ‘Mukhyamantri Pashu Kalyan Yojana’ aims to promote a compassionate attitude towards stray animals.

The Chief Minister said the new government is yet to complete 100 days, but Odisha has prepared a plan for transformative changes across sectors, aimed at both immediate and long-term development. To promote milk production, his government has come up with the ‘Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana’, under which Rs 1,423.47 crore will be spent over the next five years. Small dairy units will be helped, fodder for calves will be made available at subsidised rates and livestock insurance coverage will be increased. In collaboration with the NDDB, a vaccine production unit at Brahmapur and a state-of-the-art feed analytical laboratory at Bhubaneswar are being set up.

The agreement with the National Dairy Development Board to increase milk production is also mentioned.

Apart from this, Odisha has signed an MoU with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to strengthen state dairy cooperative societies and increase milk production, the Chief Minister said. He said the state is also collaborating with NDDB to set up a vaccine production unit at Behrampur and a state-of-the-art feed analytical laboratory at Bhubaneswar. The Chief Minister said the government is preparing ‘Prani Sampada Samriddhi Yojana’ for poultry and small animal production and a ‘Small Animal Husbandry Policy’ is being drafted to promote overall development in the small animal sector.
