Odisha News: Odisha Minister for Commerce & Shipping and Steel & Mines Vibhuti Bhushan Jena has sought support and cooperation from the Centre for development of ports and maritime infrastructure in Odisha and establishment of a world-class maritime institute or university. Mr. Jena made this request to the Central Government while attending the 20th State Maritime Development Council under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India in Goa. At this meeting, Shri Jena reaffirmed Odisha’s commitment to develop its maritime sector in line with India’s comprehensive maritime vision and called for full cooperation from the Central Government and all stakeholders. Minister Shri Jena highlighted the State’s commitment to transform its maritime infrastructure. Underlining the importance of stability in the maritime sector, Shri Jena in his address laid out the demands of the State before the Ministry. He said Odisha is aligning its initiatives with the Government of India’s green boat guidelines, including the launch of a 20-seater solar electric boat on Chilika Lake. The state is also planning to convert 2,696 registered boats into solar electric hybrid boats to reduce emissions and promote green fuel.

Called to take advantage of 480 kilometers of coastline

Shri Jena drew the attention of the Ministry to leverage Odisha’s 480 km coastline and develop a major port, cruise terminal and marina to enhance tourism and maritime connectivity on the east coast. He also proposed development of fishing harbours and jetties and sought assistance for transition to green fuel for inland waterway vessels. He also submitted a proposal to set up a state-of-the-art maritime institute/university in the state to prepare skilled human resource. Ministers of member states and senior officials of the department participated in the meeting. Usha Padhi, Principal Secretary, Department of Commerce and Transport, Government of Odisha was also present.
