A day after the pre-poll alliance between the National Conference (NC) and Congress in Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah said that a consensus on some seats has not yet been reached. NC Vice President Omar Abdullah, while endorsing the alliance for the upcoming Assembly elections, mentioned that while seat-sharing has been agreed for a majority of the 90 Assembly seats, some seats remain unresolved.
Abdullah’s statement comes after NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah announced the alliance, aimed at strengthening his electoral strategy against the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters while accompanying party leader Sakina Itoo in Noorabad, Kulgam, where she filed her nomination papers, Omar Abdullah confirmed that an agreement has been reached on most of the seats, but talks are underway on some disputed areas.
“While we have decided most of the seats, there are still points where both parties are deadlocked,” he said. “However, we will hold another meeting today to address these issues and decide the remaining seats.”
Abdullah also revealed that the NC plans to reveal its list of candidates by August 27, underlining the party’s proactive approach to connecting with voters. “We have prepared a manifesto and we are hopeful that the people will elect us to serve them for the next five years,” he added.
The coalition between Congress and NC is seen as a strategic move to consolidate opposition votes ahead of the Assembly elections, reflecting a united front in the face of political challenges in the region. As both parties move closer to finalising the distribution of seats, all eyes will be on the seats that are yet to be decided.
Meanwhile, political leaders have started filing their nominations for the first phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from NC party leader Sakina Itoo, PDP leader Dr Mehboob Beigh also filed his nomination from Anantnag in south Kashmir.
During the first phase of elections, 24 assembly segments in Jammu and Kashmir will go to polls on September 18, with 16 segments in the Kashmir Valley and 8 in the Jammu region.
