Day 1: Atham
The festival of Onam begins with Atham, an important day when families start the celebration by cleaning their homes and making colourful Rangolis, called Pookalam. This day marks the beginning of preparations for the grand festival of Onam and is symbolic of the start of the festive season. The making of Pookalam continues over the next few days using beautiful patterns and a variety of flowers.
