More than 30 thousand women joined
Becoming ‘Bijli Sakhi’, Rajshree visits all the houses in the village, collects the electricity bill and deposits it on time in the nearby electricity house. This saves people from standing in queues and Rajshree also earns good income. According to The New Indian Express report, this scheme has empowered more than 30 thousand women from Uttar Pradesh like Rajshree.
Women earned 14.6 million rupees in 4 years
Nearly 10,500 ‘Bijli Sakhis’ have collected electricity bills worth over Rs 1,120 crore and earned commission of Rs 14.6 crore in the last four years alone. This scheme was launched by the Uttar Pradesh government in May 2020 after the first wave of the Covid pandemic. The aim of the scheme was to provide employment opportunities to rural women who are educated but stay at home.
Applicable in all blocks of 75 districts
An important benefit of this initiative is that the losses suffered by electricity distribution companies due to late deposits on bills have been reduced. It was started as a pilot project in eight districts on February 1, 2020. Later, seeing its good results, the government decided to implement it in all 826 blocks of all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
How much did you earn at the beginning?
Rajshree says she joined ‘Radha Self Help Group’ in 2020 and was given the task of collecting electricity bills. Initially he earned Rs 30,000. Little by little, she began receiving calls from women who wanted her help to pay their electricity bills. Along with this, there were many changes in his family’s financial situation.
How much commission on how many invoices?
Under the Bijli Sakhi scheme, women in rural areas earn a commission of Rs 20 for every bill payment up to Rs 2,000. One percent commission is available on invoices above Rs 2,000. Similarly, in urban areas, ‘Bijli Sakhis’ get Rs 12 for every bill up to Rs 3,000 and 0.4 per cent commission for bills above Rs 3,000.
How to Become ‘Bijli Sakhi’
Only women can apply for this plan. To become a Bijli Sakhi, you need to be a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh. The government has laid down some terms and conditions on the basis of which the benefits of this scheme will be given. Government agencies not only provide ‘Bijli Sakhis’ with the necessary equipment to collect invoices and issue receipts, but are also trained in the use of digital payment methods.
