Orientation programme for newly elected Odisha MLAs begins, briefing on rules and procedures of Legislative Assembly

Bhubaneswar: A two-day orientation (knowledge enhancement) programme to provide training to the MLAs elected to the Assembly for the first time began in the Assembly on Saturday. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the programme. BJP MLAs along with members of the Cabinet including Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdev and Prabati Parida were present at the programme. On the other hand, opposition parties Biju Janata Dal and Congress boycotted the programme as they had announced earlier. There are 84 new MLAs in this assembly. Therefore, they are being given information on how to appear in the Assembly and perform their duties. Apart from various norms, how to participate in the debates of the House is also being explained. With this, the new MLAs will be able to get information about the rules and procedures of the Assembly.

BJD displayed arrogance and courtly mentality: BJP

BJP has targeted Biju Janata Dal for not participating in the two-day training programme for MLAs for the first time. BJP spokesperson Satyavrat Panda said at a press conference held at the party office that the newly elected MPs are being given detailed training in the orientation programme on the style of working in the Assembly and constructive participation of MPs in it. This will give the new MLAs a chance to be more active in the legislative process. Its detailed programme is being decided with the approval of the Speaker of the House. This time, the Speaker of the Assembly has also invited senior and well-experienced leaders such as Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, Narsingh Mishra, former minister and BJD leader Prafulla Ghadei and Ranendra Pratap Swai to provide training to the new MLAs. But Biju Janata Dal boycotted it and resorted to cheap politics by organising parallel training programmes.

BJD to give training to its MLAs: Pratap Dev

After boycotting the training programme organised for the newly elected MLAs in the Assembly, the Biju Janata Dal on Saturday said that it will itself train the party MLAs. BJD MLA and former minister Pratap Dev said while talking to reporters that BJD will organise a one-day training camp for MLAs on August 25 at 10 am. Shri Dev said that the new MLAs will be given training at the party headquarters, Shankh Bhawan. Senior and experienced MLAs will provide training to the new members on the functioning of the Assembly. He said that we have boycotted today’s programme. This is the decision of our party. We never opposed any particular person. We are talking about respect. He said that this programme should have been inaugurated by the Chief Minister or the Assembly Speaker. The list of invitees for the event has changed since we spoke. The chief guest is still the Union Minister. He said that this is a contempt of the office of the Chief Minister.
