Rice and legume planting area increases by 6% to 36.905 million hectares, says the Government | Agriculture

The area under paddy has increased by six per cent to 36.905 million hectares so far in the ongoing kharif (summer) season 2024-25, the agriculture ministry said on Tuesday.

Sowing of paddy, the main kharif crop, begins with the onset of southwest monsoon in June, and harvesting takes place from September onwards.

In addition, the area sown with pulses increased to 12.018 million hectares as of Aug. 20 of the current season, from 11.369 million hectares in the same period last year, the ministry said in a statement.

The area under arhar increased from 40.74 lakh hectares to 45.78 lakh hectares. The area under urad was 28.33 lakh hectares as against 29.52 lakh hectares.

The area under coarse cereals and ‘Shree Anna’ (millets) increased to 181.11 lakh hectares from 176 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

Among coarse grains, the area under maize increased from 81.25 lakh hectares to 87.23 lakh hectares.

The area sown to oilseeds increased marginally to 186.77 lakh hectares so far this kharif season from 185.13 lakh hectares a year ago.

Among commercial crops, area under sugarcane increased marginally to 57.68 lakh hectares from 57.11 lakh hectares, area under cotton declined to 111.07 lakh hectares from 122.15 lakh hectares, while area under jute and mesta remained lower at 5.70 lakh hectares against 6.56 lakh hectares.

The total area sown under all kharif crops remained just over 2 per cent higher at 1,031.56 lakh hectares as compared to 1,010.52 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

The southwest monsoon in India is currently active and progressing well with significant rainfall recorded in several regions.
