Paddy sowing up 4.29% so far in 2024-25 kharif season: Report | Agriculture

The area under paddy has increased by 4.29 per cent to 39.42 million hectares so far in the ongoing kharif (summer) season 2024-25, the agriculture ministry said on Tuesday.

In the same period last year, the area under rice cultivation was 37.8 million hectares.

Sowing of paddy, the main kharif crop, begins with the onset of southwest monsoon in June, and harvesting takes place from October onwards.

The area sown with pulses increased to 12.21 million hectares as of August 27 of the current season, compared with 11.55 million hectares in the same period last year, the ministry said in a statement.

The area under arhar increased from 4.07 million hectares to 4.57 million hectares. The sowing of arhar (tur) has been completed.

The area sown with urad was 2.9 million hectares compared to 3.08 million hectares.

The area under coarse cereals and ‘Shree Anna’ (millets) increased to 18.55 million hectares from 17.75 million hectares in the same period last year.

Among coarse grains, the area under maize increased to 8.72 million hectares from 8.12 million hectares.

The area sown to oilseeds increased marginally to 18.83 million hectares so far this kharif season, from 18.73 million hectares last year.

Among commercial crops, area under sugarcane increased marginally to 5.76 million hectares from 5.71 million hectares, area under cotton decreased to 11.13 million hectares from 12.27 million hectares, while area under jute and mesta remained lower at 5,70,000 hectares against 6,56,000 hectares.

The total area sown under all kharif crops remained just over 2 per cent higher at 106.5 million hectares, compared with 104.48 million hectares in the same period last year.

The southwest monsoon in India is currently active and progressing well with significant rainfall recorded in several regions.
