Calcutta: The parents of the junior doctor, who was brutally raped and murdered in a Kolkata hospital, have alleged that the state police tried to bribe them to cover up the case. The parents of the deceased doctor have accused the state police of raping and murdering the state police. Kolkata Police of trying to suppress the case by hastily incinerating the doctor’s body.
Last month, a female medical intern was raped and murdered at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata while she was on night shift, triggering nationwide protests. Her body was found in the college’s seminar room.
The father of the deceased doctor, who joined the protesters on Wednesday evening, said a senior police officer tried to bribe them after the incident came to light. “The police, from the beginning, tried to hush up the case. We were not allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station while it was taken away for an autopsy,” the father said.
“Later, when the body was handed over to us, a senior police officer offered us money, which we immediately refused,” he added.
“When the daughter’s body was lying in front of the parents at home, the police offered them money. Is this the humanity of the police?” said the doctor’s aunt.
“Until the last rites were performed, we were surrounded by 300 to 400 policemen, but after the last rites were performed, no policemen were seen there. What would the family do? How would they get home? The police did not take any responsibility. The police were active until the last rites were performed and after that, they became completely inactive,” he added.
Protests rock Calcutta
Protests rocked the city of joy as residents turned off their lights for an hour from 9pm on Wednesday and took to the streets with lit candles calling for justice for the doctor.
The West Bengal Young Doctors Front, which had called for the protest, titled the event “Let there be light, let there be justice”. In Kolkata, protests were held at prominent locations including Shyambazar five-point junction, Moulali, New Town Biswa Bangla Gate, Rashbehari junction, Behala, Garia, Ballygunge, Hazra junction and Jadavpur bus stand 8B.
Kolkata police under scrutiny
Kolkata police have come under heavy criticism for their handling of the Kolkata rape and murder case and their conduct at the initial stage of the investigation. The police arrested a civic volunteer for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of the junior doctor.
The Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the second week of August, saying no significant progress had been made in the case.
The High Court asked the West Bengal government why a murder case was not registered from the beginning and a case of unnatural death was initiated. The court also observed that the then principal of the RG Kar Medical College should have been the first person to be questioned in the rape-murder case.
