Paris 2024 Olympics: More than 140 cyberattacks reported; government and telecom entities in the crosshairs

French authorities said Tuesday that more than 140 cyberattacks were reported during the Paris Olympics, but none of them disrupted the competitions.

In the run-up and During the Olympic GamesFrance’s cybersecurity agency was on high alert for attacks that could disrupt the functioning of the organizing committee, ticket sales or transportation.

Between July 26 and August 11, government cybersecurity agency Anssi recorded 119 reports of low-impact “security events” and 22 incidents in which “a malicious actor” successfully attacked a victim’s information system.

The attacks mainly targeted government entities, as well as sports, transport and telecommunications infrastructure, the agency said.

According to Anssi, one-third of these were downtime incidents, half of which were due to denial-of-service attacks designed to overwhelm servers.

The other cyber incidents were related to attempted or actual data breaches and disclosures, among others.

“All cyber events that occurred during this period were generally characterized by their low impact,” Anssi said.

The Grand Palais, which housed Olympic events in Parisand around forty other museums in France were victims of a ransomware attack in early August, but this did not affect any of the information systems involved in the games, according to Anssi.

Ransomware exploits security flaws to encrypt and lock computer systems, demanding a ransom from a user or organization to unlock them.

During the period delayed by the pandemic Tokyo Olympics 2021Organizers reported 450 million such transactions, twice as many as during the 2012 London Olympics.

On the eve of the Paris Olympics, Marie-Rose Bruno, director of technology and information systems for the Paris Games, had said she expected “eight to ten times more” cyber attacks than those seen at the Tokyo Games.
