Former BJP leader Pandit Sunil Bharala said, “The Hindu minority in Bangladesh is under threat right now. Temples and places of worship are not protected and are under surveillance at night. Our daughters are also not safe. I condemn these attacks and appeal to the caretaker government of Bangladesh to protect them. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a strong stand on this. There is anger in the country. India should take a firm decision on this issue if this continues.”
Earlier, large crowds gathered outside Parliament in London and the White House in Washington to protest against alleged violence against minority Hindus and other groups in Bangladesh following the resignation and ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Jamaat-e-Islami leaders visited the Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka with Hindu leaders to foster interfaith harmony and emphasize that the country belongs to all its citizens, irrespective of religion, and that everyone has equal rights.
The leader further stressed that there should be no question of majority or minority; everyone is equal, adding that he stressed the importance of treating people with respect and dignity, recognizing them as human beings. Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation with Sheikh Hasina, who tendered her resignation from her post on August 5 in the wake of growing protests. The protests, led mainly by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs, took the form of anti-government protests. Recently, an interim government was formed in the country, with seventeen members being sworn in at a ceremony in Dhaka on Thursday and 84-year-old Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus as the country’s chief advisor.
