PM Modi visits Poland for bilateral talks with Polish counterpart, meets President Duda

The first day concluded successfully on Wednesday in Warsaw following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at a diaspora event there, and the second day of his visit to Poland also has numerous engagements as PM Modi is scheduled to hold talks with his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda on Thursday.

PM Modi will hold delegation-level talks with his counterpart Tusk in Poland, following which both leaders will deliver press statements there. Later, PM Modi will be invited to a lunch with Tusk. He will also lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and meet President of Poland Andrzej Duda as part of his visit to the nation. PM Modi will also meet business leaders and influential people of Poland.

It is noteworthy that PM Modi addressed the Indian diaspora at an event organised in his honour by the Indian community in Warsaw on Wednesday, where he received a warm welcome. In his address, PM Modi noted that the Indian Prime Minister was visiting Poland after 45 years. PM Modi spoke about the progress made by India in the last 10 years and expressed confidence that India will become the third largest economy in the coming years.

He also spoke about his vision of the country becoming a developed nation by 2047. He also noted that Kabbadi has emerged as a source of connection between the two nations as Poland will be hosting the Kabaddi championship for the first time this year. PM Modi said, “Innovation and youth will energize the development of both nations. Today, I come to you with great good news. Both India and Poland have agreed on a social security agreement which will benefit all friends like you.” The Prime Minister also recalled how Jam Saheb of Nawanagar Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja gave shelter to Polish women and children during World War II. He said that he is still remembered as the “Good Maharaja” in Poland.

“In Poland, Jamsaheb is still remembered as ‘Dobry or the Good Maharaja’. During World War II, when Poland was facing hardships as thousands of Polish women and children were wandering from place to place seeking shelter, Jamsaheb, Digvijay Singh Ranjit Singh Jadeja ji came forward. He had built a special camp for Polish women and children and he told the women and children in the camp that just as the people of Nava Nagar call me Bapu, I am also their Bapu,” he said. PM Modi arrived in Poland on Wednesday, the first Indian leader to visit the Central European country in 45 years.

His visit to Warsaw comes at a time when India and Poland are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations. Members of the Indian diaspora greeted Prime Minister Modi and he returned the affection. The Prime Minister greeted the gathering and also shook hands with some of those present. Members of the Indian community raised slogans praising Prime Minister Modi and chanted slogans like “Bharat mata ki jai”. PM Modi, after concluding his engagements in Poland, will travel to Ukraine at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine.
