Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) have brought significant relief to the people of Dhangri block in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.

People have been provided with ‘Pucca’ houses under PMAY and frequent employment under MNREGA, which provides relief from problems like migration and frequent repairs required in ‘Kaccha’ houses.

Speaking about the benefits of the scheme, Shafiq Ahmad, a local resident of Dhagri block, said, “The government has done a good job. People have got houses under the PMAJ and the road has also been constructed.”

Another local resident, Sushama Devi, said, “Our house was earlier called ‘Kaccha’ and now it is called ‘Pucca’. Water used to drip, now we have relief. Other houses are also being constructed.”

Another local resident said that the implementation of the MNREGA scheme has benefited many people. “Earlier there was a lot of unemployment; now people have jobs. With MNREGA, people are getting jobs,” he said.

A resident of Dhagri block expressed his happiness at receiving the ‘pucca’ house. “The government has given us a house, earlier we had a ‘kaccha’ house, water was leaking, we are thankful to the government, some houses are being constructed and others are being built, people are happy,” he said.

Gram Rojgar Sevak Mohd Rashid highlighted the success of PMAY and MNREGA scheme.

“Since 2018, houses have been approved under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin scheme. Around 80% of the people have completed the construction of their approved houses in our Panchayat. All the people are benefiting directly. People are getting ‘pucca’ houses now. The local population is benefiting from the NREGA scheme,” he said.

The main objective of PMAY-G is to replace the “kaccha” houses in the villages with concrete houses. The scheme was launched in April 2016 and is part of the government’s “Housing for All” initiative.

The MNREGA aims to provide at least 100 days of paid work each year to rural households. It was approved in September 2005 and launched in February 2006.
