Preethi Pal wins bronze in T35 200m, her second medal at Paris Paralympics; PM Modi says it is a historic achievement

Preethi Pal won her second Medal in a Paralympic Games by taking bronze in the women’s 200m T35 competition at the Paris Games on Sunday.

She became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two medals at either the Paralympic or Olympic Games.

On August 30, Preethi Pal, a farmer’s daughter from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, won India’s first ever athletics medal by securing a bronze in the women’s 100m T35 event with a personal best time of 14.21 seconds.

The T35 classification is intended for athletes who have coordination problems such as hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis.

Congratulating her on her achievement, PM Modi said her dedication is truly remarkable.

“A historic achievement for Preeti Pal as she won her second medal in the same edition of the 2024 Paralympic Games with a bronze in the women’s 200m T35 event! She is an inspiration to the people of India. Her dedication is truly remarkable.”

Early in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to India’s medal winners at the Paralympicsincluding Preethi, over the phone and praised their efforts in the ongoing competition. He congratulated each medal winner and said they had made the country proud with their performances.

On Friday, reigning Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara maintained her run of form and took gold in the women’s 10m air rifle final at the Paris Paralympics. Shooter Mona Agarwal took the bronze medal in the same event. India’s silver medal also came in shooting, with Manish Narwal bagging a silver in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 P1 competition.
